Public Record: A Letter Sent in the Spirit of Democratic Vigilance
Robert J. Rei – April 17, 2025
There are moments in a republic’s life when the act of writing becomes a form of resistance. This is one of them.
On April 8th, I sent the following letter to the United Nations and to the Obama Foundation. I did so not out of alarmism, but out of a calm and measured reading of signals too loud to ignore. I sent it in good faith, believing that someone, somewhere within our international and civic architecture might still respond to calls for accountability.
April 8, 2025, Tuesday, 10:10 PM EST
Dear Mr. Dujarric and Mr. Haq,
Cc: President Barack Obama, via the Obama Foundation (info@obama.org)My name is Robert J. Rei, an independent writer and civic commentator based in the United States. I am the author of a public newsletter titled “Robert J. Rei”, hosted on Substack and followed by a growing audience of engaged Americans concerned with the erosion of democratic norms in our country.
I write today to issue a formal call for attention and observation from the United Nations in light of a critical upcoming convergence in the United States. From April 19th through April 21st, a wave of nationwide protests is scheduled to occur—primarily in peaceful opposition to anti-democratic judicial decisions and escalating authoritarian rhetoric surrounding the 2024 election cycle.
However, there is growing and credible concern that these protests may be used as pretext for the invocation of the Insurrection Act by Donald Trump or his political allies, particularly as the date of April 20th—the birthday of Adolf Hitler—approaches. This timing is significant, both symbolically and politically, as it has historically been embraced by extremist elements within far-right movements.
Just this week, the U.S. Supreme Court issued decisions effectively stripping due process rights from certain immigrant groups. These legal shifts, when combined with an already volatile political climate, have led many observers—including myself—to warn of a possible attempt to escalate suppression or delegitimize civic protest through legal or military channels.
To that end, I respectfully urge the United Nations to:
* Monitor the situation closely through its appropriate democratic observation mechanisms
* Consider sending observation representatives or requesting access to live field updates from civil society actors
* Issue, if deemed appropriate, a statement of international concern and readiness regarding the potential misuse of executive power during a mass protest moment in the United States
I have published a public bulletin addressing these exact concerns, titled:
“No More Masks: The Supreme Court, the Führer’s Birthday, and America’s Next Move”
It may be accessed here: https://robertjrei.substack.com/p/no-more-masksThis message is not written in alarmism. It is written from pattern recognition, informed by historical precedent, legal decay, and growing social instability. I believe we are entering a moment of significant democratic inflection—and I hope this message may contribute to an informed and globally aware response.
Thank you for your time and your service to international peace and democratic integrity.
With respect,
Robert J. Rei[Screen Shot of Email located below]
More than a week has passed. No response has come.
Given the growing tension surrounding this weekend’s convergence of dangerous anniversaries—including the birthday of Adolf Hitler and the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in Lexington, Massachusetts—I believe it is now essential to create a public record of my outreach.
The letter below remains unanswered. But it is not unheard.
Let this stand not only as a witness, but as an invitation:
To speak.
To ask.
To act.
To remember that freedom is not inherited.
It is re-won—generation by generation.

This regime is absolutely corrupt
I agree. Even a warning unheeded is still a warning.
